Jennifer Mendoza Artist's Statement

My work consists of portraits of members of my immediate and extended family. They are people with or for whom I experience love, fear, respect, affection, pity, anger, pride, sympathy, humor and every shade of emotion that lies among these. These are the people who I am closest to and yet about whom I have much to learn.

I deliberately choose to portray these images at a scale that is noticeably larger than life, with the subject at the foremost of the picture plane. The purpose of this is to eliminate distractions that might influence the viewer, and to force confrontation. My intent is not to simply record a likeness, but to capture a moment of one person relating to another.
